BenMosconaFeatured on our website during April 2013 is  ILFORD Website Photo Competition winner, 16 year old Ben Moscona. The 11th grader has only been profpictaking photographs for about a year and half. That’s what makes his winning photograph all the more remarkable. “Last year, I had finally saved up enough money to buy a camera and a couple of lenses,” said Ben. “I’m a runner, a hiker, a skier, and a mountain biker.  I try to incorporate my photography into the sports I love and share the amazing sights I see in nature.  I’ve learned a lot over the past year, especially about shooting sports, and hope to keep learning and pursuing great shots!”

We interviewed Ben to find out more about this young photographer and his passion for exciting images. (more…)

SP Sandstorm in Masai Village

ILFORD blog: Tell us about the winning photo that is featured on this for February.

Simon Powell: The photo was taken in Kenya whilst on safari. We visited a Masai village and soon after we arrived a sandstorm blew up. I noticed a lone warrior walking away the sand in the air was creating a hazy effect against the blue sky.

IB: How did you “finish” the photograph? Did you use any special enhancements?

SP: The only processing required was cropping and tweaking contrast in curves using PS6.

IB: When did you get interested in photography?  How long have you been taking photographs?

IB: Do you travel quite a lot?

SP: I do travel quite a bit mainly in Europe and am particularly interested in historical locations, Rome, Venice and a like.

IB: Do like to see your work in print? Do you most often do it yourself or send it out?

SB: I print my favourite photos and since joining my local camera club, Epsom Camera Club, enter them in internal and external competitions where I have received favourable results. I print my own photos and do use ILFORD papers mainly ILFORD GALERIE Prestige Smooth Gloss and Smooth Pearl.

Michael Down Talks about ILFORD GALERIE Prestige Smooth Gloss for his Winning Photo

ILFORDJan2013Michael Down of Oregon was the December 2012 winner in the ILFORD Monthly Website Competition. His photo of tulips was a welcome image for the middle of winter this year.  We caught up with Michael early one morning to find out why he snapped this photo and why he thinks ILFORD GALERIE Prestige Smooth Gloss inkjet photo paper looks like a “real” photo. Enjoy this short video interview with photographer Michael Down.

Michael grows flowers in his yard enjoying the best of the Oregon growing season. He shot the winning image in full sun right on his patio. It makes clear that great photographs are often right in front of us giving us opportunities to take beautiful photographs in the most mundane circumstance. “You see something that looks interesting and you just want to try to shoot it in an interesting say,” says Michael Down. “I’m an engineer. I think about these things in great detail…I have a pad that I keep with me and if I want to think about a photo sometimes I’ll think about how I’m going to shoot it days or even months before I actually do it. I’ll think about what’s the best time to do it, where will I want to do it.” Good advice to visualize the photograph and plan the shot.

August Winner in Monthly ILFORD Website Competition

The winner in August’s ILFORD Website Competition is a nature photograph of something from the other side of the world… literally!  The beautiful shot of Trigg Beach, in Trigg, Western Australia was submitted by Cindy Buchan. “It was the first time I had visited that beach,” Cindy said, “and actually we only arrived just before sunset! I love going to the beach and shooting sunsets, the sky has so so many faces, and rarely are two even slightly close.”

Stuart Shore featured on

This month’s winner is a beautiful photograph of a soaring owl by UK based wildlife and landscape photographer Stuart Shore. Here’s what Stuart’s website says about the photographer, “Born on the Isle of Wight and still here after 38 years. I have, since a young age, had a love for wildlife and nature. Watching Red Squirrels and wild birds in my Grand Parents woods and gardens were the catalyst that have fuelled my interest in the wildlife of the Isle of Wight, and it has given me the opportunity to enjoy the full diversity the Island has available. I spend many an hour in various locations around the Island and Hampshire area photographing much of its wildlife, nature and scenery, and I hope, over the next couple of years, to photograph many more of its wonders.” We certainly hope you will continue to capture these stunning photos.
