Fiber Ink Studio on ILFORD GALERIE Photo Papers

Lesly Deschler Canossi and Andrew Buckland founded Fiber Ink Studio in New York as an alternative for high quality inkjet photo prints. They met while attending Graduate School at Maryland Institute College of Art. Both are artists and photographers with decades of printing experience who lead workshops on color management and digital printing. They are committed to sharing their expert knowledge while providing color accuracy, a fast turn around, and a collaborative environment that welcomes creativity rather than frustration. Lesly has graciously offered the guest blog below to talk about why they often use ILFORD GALERIE Prestige Gold Fibre Silk and Smooth Pearl for client work.

by Lesly Deschler Canossi

At Fiber Ink Studio we are interested in creating lasting relationships with the artists for whom we print. While many of our clients leave the printing decisions to us, we have a solid client base interested in a more collaborative approach. An initial meeting to discuss nuances of papers is really important. We talk about the tone and surface of papers as well as how it feels in hand and how it looks on the wall. The next step is to make proof prints on different paper surfaces. At this point it becomes very clear which paper works for the image and for the artist. (more…)

ILFORD Innovation CEO Paul Willems with Vincent Oliver of photo-i

Paul Willems, CEO of ILFORD

ILFORD has been an innovator since 1879 in the earliest days of the photo industry.  Vincent Oliver of photo-i interviews Paul Willems, CEO of ILFORD in Marly, Switzerland. This video gives you and overview of how ILFORD keeps at the top of it’s game with a commitment to research and development and staying close to customers, responding to the needs of those who print their own photographs.

Oliver asks Willems what makes ILFORD special for the photographer.  “Well obviously ILFORD has always been associated with quality,” said Willems. “Anybody who is an ILFORD user expects to get that best quality ‘out of the box’ product. But also [they are] expecting ease of use.  Through our imaging science and coating technology … our media is totally compatible…. And last but not least permanence of the image… Our key products like our Gold Fibre Silk or Smooth …. products have been awarded by the Wilhelm Institute with a light permanence of over 200 years which clearly shows the tremendous quality.” Willems goes on to talk about the reality that inkjet printing can now equal or surpass analog prints. Paul McAlister is an interesting guy. He’s an Irishman who currently lives in Ontario, Canada.   He’s a second career photographer who shoots a wide variety of commercial work from portraiture to fine art reproduction. And like a lot of photographers I know, he enjoys landscape photography most of all.

One of Paul’s images was chosen in the August Website Photo Competition as Highly Recommended.  He wrote to us to say how much he enjoys quality of ILFORD GALERIE inkjet papers and we caught up with him recently by phone to learn more about his photography and why he prefers ILFORD inkjet media for his digital photo prints.  Enjoy the audio from the interview below.
