NEW Video! Download and Use ICC Profiles for ILFORD Inkjet Papers

Josh Fischer ILFORD Product ManagerJosh Fischer explains in step by step detail how to download and install ICC profiles from   These profiles are specific to the paper, printer, and inks that you are using. There are many profiles available for a variety of printer and paper combinations.  To get the very best from your ILFORD GALERIE inkjet paper it’s important to use the correct profile. Click on the viewer below to  see this new video!

We’ll soon have another tutorial for using the profiles.  But for now remember that when you select a printer profile in Photoshop or Lightroom you’ll need to make sure THREE things are set properly in your print driver before printing:

  1. Set the media type – the print driver will be defaulted to the last used media type. Make sure the media type is set properly for the paper you’re using.
  2. Set the resolution – you’ll find recommendations at or click on “Printer Driver Settings” at the top of the page here on the blog.
  3. Turn color management OFF in the printer driver – when you use a profile you need to disable color management in the driver to avoid “double color managing” which will not give you a good result.

ILFORD GALERIE | Printer Settings

In a previous post, Printer Settings Using Printer Profiles, we talked about downloading the appropriate profile for your ILFORD GALERIE inkjet paper.  Just to review you’ll find those profiles at Select “Support” from the tabs at the top. You’ll see a dropdown menu there that includes “Printer Profiles.” Read more about selecting, downloading and installing those profiles so they’re ready to use.  CLICK HERE to read that previous post in its entirety.

After we get the profile and we’re ready to print we need a bit more information to be able to choose the proper settings in the print driver of our printer. These settings will insure the ink is applied to the paper surface properly.  This setting is crucial to getting good inkjet prints. There are three things that really have to be set properly in your print driver when using the printer profile in Photoshop, Lightroom, or other printing software:

  1. Media or Paper Type
  2. Resolution (usually 1440 or equivalent)
  3. Color management must be turned off in the printer driver

So the question is, “What Epson or Canon or HP paper type should I set in my driver if my paper does not conform to the nomenclature of the manufacturer’s paper?”  ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl is a good case study for this example.

ILFORD GALERIE Printer Settings at www.ilford.comYou can access these recommended printer settings at  Click on the “Support” tab and select “Printer Settings.”  Here you will enter the particular range of inkjet media, your printer manufacturer, model number, and the surface of the paper you’re using.  In some cases the media type setting may be different than what is printed on the sheet in the box because selections online can be customized for your particular printer driver media types.

Note that you’ll find the recommended media type setting and the recommended resolution as it is listed in your particular print driver.  The “Colour” setting would only be used if the printer is controlling the color. Otherwise as we discussed above, color management should be disabled in the print driver if you are allowing Photoshop or another software package to drive the printer profile.

It is vital that you set the media type to a setting that is appropriate to the paper and surface that you are using.  The quality of your photo depends on the proper setting. Simply leaving your printer driver defaulted to “Plain Paper” will not yield high quality results so take care to be sure this setting is correct each time you print.

ILFORD InSite | Printer Settings Using Printer Profiles

Over the years one of the largest hurdles for folks coming to a professional workflow for their inkjet printing involves how to set up the printing software and the print driver so that a paper profile is being used properly. Because operating systems and print drivers vary it’s nearly impossible to address each and every combination in detail. But there are some basic principles that apply no matter what printer or operating system you’re using.

The beginning point for this process, like many things in life, is actually before you even think about printing.  When you’re making corrections and changes to your digital file you’ll want to be doing that on a good quality monitor that is calibrated and profiled. No matter what you do in the printing workflow, if you have made corrections on a monitor that is too bright your prints will end up too dark.  Similarly if the monitor is too yellow, your prints will be too blue, and on and on. If you make corrections to a file on a monitor that is not calibrated and profiled you have no way to know if what you’re seeing on the screen bears even a slight resemblance to what you’ve actually done to the file.  The only way you can effectively work on your files is by using a calibrated and profiled monitor.  X-Rite produces display only color management solutions including ColorMunki Display and i1Display Pro that can calibrate and profile both monitors and projectors. These are newly designed state of the art colorimeters that double as ambient light measurement devices. Check them out at

Now that our file is prepared and ready to print it’s time to move on the profile we’ll need for our paper/printer/ink combination.  ILFORD provides you high quality profiles for the most widely used photographic printers. In just a couple of simple steps you can download and install your paper/printer/ink profile.  For simplicity’s sake we’ll call them paper profiles from here on but it’s important to note that these profiles are actually specific to the paper, printer, and ink you’ll be using.  So let’s go get our paper profile and place it where software packages can find it.

ILFORD Printer ProfilesFirst you’ll navigate to Select “Support” from the tabs at the top. You’ll see a dropdown menu there that includes “Printer Profiles.”

Log in or create your own personal ILFORD login. You’ll use this each time you want to access information on the site.

ILFORD Printer ProfilesChoose the type of paper, your printer manufacturer, your particular model of printer, and the surface of paper you’re planning to use.  You’ll see the download link appear once these options have been selected. A .zip file will be downloaded. Simply expand that file to reveal a folder within which are two files.

ILFORD Printer Profile DownloadOne file is the actual profile and the other is a READ ME file that gives you instructions on exactly where to install the profile on your system so that programs like Adobe Photoshop can find the profile for selection when you initialize the actual printing process. Follow these instructions carefully to install the profile in the correct directory in your particular operating system.  And be sure that all Adobe programs are closed or restarted after this process is accomplished.  If you install a profile into a directory with an Adobe program open, that program will not be able to “see” the profile until it has been closed and restarted.

This READ ME file also includes settings for how to use the profile in software packages like Photoshop, Elements, and Lightroom. In addition this same file gives you important information for setting the print driver after you’ve configured the software properly and have initiated the printing process.

No matter what operating system, software package, or printer, paper and ink combination you’re using there are four main things you must set properly in a custom printing workflow.

  1. Select the appropriate profile properly in the software package. Remember you’ll want to use the profile that is appropriate for your particular printer, paper, and ink combination.
  2. In the printer driver select the media type.  This is the “kind” of paper you’re using… for instance ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl.
  3. Select the resolution for printing. Again printer drivers will vary on how they describe this setting. See the READ ME file you download for more specific information for your particular situation.
  4. TURN COLOR MANAGEMENT OFF. This imperative refers to turning off color management in the printer driver.  This seems counter intuitive for some because what we’re actually trying to accomplish is … well… color management!

Whether you use the high quality profiles provided by ILFORD or use color management solutions like X-Rite i1Photo Pro, i1Publish Pro, or ColorMunki Photo to make custom printer profiles, setting the printing software and the printer driver properly is essential to getting accurate predictable quality from your paper, printer, and ink combination. Taking the time to set the media type, resolution, and turn color management off in the printer driver gives YOU control of the printed output.  This workflow combined with a calibrated and profiled monitor and good print viewing light can improve your “screen to print” match on your inkjet prints tremendously.

ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl Inkjet Paper

ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl Inkjet PaperWhen you print on inkjet paper you want excellent tonal range, water resistance, and confidence that your image will not slowly fade away over time. ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl gives you all this and a beautiful surface for portfolio prints, finished prints delivered to you client, or photos for your own enjoyment.

200+ Year Print Permanence

Tests still in progress at Wilhelm Research indicated that ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl, when printed with pigment inks and displayed under glass, will be beautiful to look at 200 years from now! Covering a print with glass reduces exposure to airborne pollutants that can cause “gas fading.” Using UV glass will yield additional protection from UV rays that also conspire to reduce permanence.  Displaying prints made on Smooth Pearl behind UV glass can extend their life beyond 200 years.(Download the full report.)

ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl was rated as having a high resistance to water and humidity. Besides “gas fading” from pollutants and exposure to UV light, humidity is the next great enemy of print longevity. Once again ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl comes out a champ.

Even if you simply put the print up on a wall out of direct sunlight in normal room lighting without protection your print on ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl using pigment inks is expected to still be beautiful for over 70 years! (Note that luminance levels exceeding 450 LUX for 12 hours per day may reduce this estimate). What makes ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl such a great choice for print permanence and image longevity and stability?

ILFORD GALERIE Inkjet PaperNanoporous technology is part of the magic. Inkjet papers are made up of layers. The receiving layer is the layer that actually “receives” and holds the ink.  Various additional layers make up the rest of weight of the paper and provide the base upon which this receiving layer resides.  Nanoporous layers take up ink in tiny channels making the print “dry to the touch” when it comes out of the printer making it possible to  gently handle prints immediately. This fast drying property allows you to use high speed settings on your printer. The technology “locks” the ink into the receiving layer helping to provide resistance to humidity and water.

ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl has a heavy base weight that gives prints a rich feel as well. At 290gsm Smooth Pearl exceeds the competition giving you the look and feel of  a conventional photograph. And ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl achieves a clean white surface without optical brighteners. You’ll be amazed at the color gamut possible with excellent image clarity. Expect your printed image to meet and exceed conventional photographic printing.

All ILFORD Smooth papers are “universal” papers. They are well matched to both dye and pigment inks from a variety of manufacturers. This “universal” ILFORD GALERIE Smooth Pearl no matter what printer or ink type you normally use.

ILFORD wants you to get the best print possible. That’s way we provide printer profiles for the most widely used photographic quality inkjet printers directly from our website.
